Mendelssohn: Elijah

Mendelssohn’s Elijah – A Fiery Musical Feast!

Following their spectacular 2014 performance of Verdi’s Requiem, Lewisham Choral Society and The Derbyshire Singers make a welcome return to the Fairfield Halls to perform Mendelssohn’s magnificent Elijah. Building on the legacy of Bach and Handel oratorios and using a rather sparse Biblical source, Mendelssohn added a large helping of early Romantic drama and colour: a musical depiction of rains falling on the parched earth, a fierce contest between Jehovah and Baal, a sacrifice consumed by fire and the prophet’s ascension to Heaven in a blazing chariot.

Fiery and dramatic, yet richly lyrical – a feast indeed!

Soprano: Elisabeth Meister
Mezzo-Soprano: Susanna Spicer
Tenor: Peter Davoren
Bass: Colin Campbell
Treble: Edmund Irving

Conductor: Dan Ludford-Thomas
