…..strayed onto Blackheath.
On Saturday 28 March, around a dozen LCS members joined a scratch choir and orchestra to rehearse and perform Part 2 of Handel’s Messiah at All Saint’s Church on the heath. There were around forty singers in all, drawn from various south London choirs and complemented by a very competent ensemble of instrumentalists and four impressive soloists. As with the January performance of Part 1, direction was by Ben Saul who is an old friend of LCS.
The two singing days were in aid of the organ restoration fund, and singers had the additional incentive of the sight of the disassembled organ, recently returned from the organ builders, set out down one side of the church.
It was a spirited and enjoyable performance as well as a friendly social event. LCS choir member Jim Toohill said, “Even with fewer numbers than January, we made a good sound (we were fortunate in the bases to have a student of voice from the Royal College of Music). And of course, a good excuse to duck Saturday’s domestic chores .”
