Lewisham Choral Society presents a sparkling programme for the festive season and our headline work is Benjamin Britten’s lively cantata, St Nicolas.
This vivid retelling of the legends and glories of St Nicolas’s life is set for an impressive variety of musical forces: choir, tenor soloist, piano, organ, strings and percussion, not to mention some ‘pickled’ boy trebles!
Britten uses striking contrasts in instrumentation throughout the work to great dramatic effect. Our talented bevy of musicians includes tenor Sam Harris, pianist Clíodna Shanahan, and Lucy Morrell on piano and organ.
Our concert also includes Morten Lauridsen’s sublime setting of the text O Magnum Mysterium. Lauridsen said he “wanted this piece to resonate immediately and deeply into the core of the listener”, and we know that our audience will agree that he succeeded.
And no Christmas concert would be complete without a splendid selection of carols for choir and audience!
