Lewisham Choral Society presents a sparkling programme of music for the festive season, including excerpts from Rachmaninoff’s exquisite All-Night Vigil.
In contrast to his often flamboyant style, this peaceful, introspective work, written in 1915, perhaps reflects the composer’s emotions at a time of the turmoil in war-torn Russia. The work was strongly influenced by traditional Orthodox chant, with rich harmonies underpinned by a resonant deep bass, creating a distinctly Slavonic sound.
Our talented new principal accompanist, Clíodna Shanahan will also perform a solo item by Irish composer Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin and will accompany the choir on piano and organ.
No Christmas concert would be complete without a splendid selection of carols, including the beautiful Ukrainian Carol of the Bells, and of course there will be plenty of opportunity for audience participation!
